“I’m at an age where I should be retiring but because I enjoy my job so much, I haven’t decided when I will.”
That’s what Jeannie L., a staff member at The Esquiline, a Life Plan Community at The Shrine, says when asked about her job.
What is it that Jeannie enjoys so much about her work? We sat down to talk to her for the latest installment of our “I Am Esquiline” series. Get to know Jeannie, her work, and the community at which she plays such a vital role.
Working at a Belleville, Illinois Retirement Home Community
To back up a bit, Jeannie is the Concierge Supervisor at The Esquiline, a Belleville, Illinois retirement community. She’s originally from West Salem, Illinois, a small village that’s about a two-hour drive from Belleville. She has spent nearly all of her career in healthcare, specifically with senior living communities, and has been with The Esquiline for around two and a half years.
Jeannie is the bright, welcoming face who greets everyone who enters through the main entrance of The Esquiline. If you’ve ever called to schedule a tour or ask for directions, it’s likely that you’ve spoken with Jeannie. Her primary duty is to answer the phones and help residents with any questions they might have.
When you walk in the door, you’ll be welcomed by a friendly face—most likely Jeannie’s!
Finding Joy in Her Job: Jeannie Shares the Best Parts of Working at a Retirement Community like The Esquiline
When asked what she enjoys about her job, it’s clear that Jeannie enjoys more than just one aspect of her work. She enjoys the little things, like getting a cup of coffee with residents on her break, to the personal satisfaction and joy she gains from getting to know the residents on a personal level.
She also likes the problem-solving aspect of her job. If residents have any concerns or issues, they can come to Jeannie. She then turns her considerable skills to resolving the concern of the resident so they can enjoy the vibrant, hassle-free lifestyle of The Esquiline.
Jeannie also adds that she likes being part of a team of wonderful coworkers and a well-run system.
“I have always been impressed with the way the organization is run and managed,” she said.
An added bonus is the beautiful environment of the campus, which is located on the grounds of one of the largest outdoor Catholic shrines in America.
“It’s such a relaxing feeling driving into work and having such a beautiful outdoor environment,” Jeannie said. “It is a very calming feeling to start the day.”
The Esquiline is located 200-acres of beautiful landscapes.
Staff and Residents: Two Crucial Ingredients for a Welcoming Retirement Community Environment
The staff plays a huge role in shaping the environment of a Life Plan Community (also known as a continuing care retirement community or CCRC). In fact, it’s one of the more important factors when choosing a Life Plan Community (CCRC). If the staff has a can-do, friendly attitude, it has a positive effect on the overall community atmosphere. The opposite also holds true—if staff members are surly or unhappy with their jobs, it can derail an otherwise positive culture.
